19c Mahogany, Ash Wood & Brassware Oriental Sea Chest
The latest addition to our shop is this late 1800’s oriental sea chest
A true statement piece of furniture, made up from solid mahogany & ash wood which create a flamboyant combination of quality & timeless style.
This chest would have started life as a storage piece for a seaman travelling the waters from Britain to China.
Many chests this age were styled to the traditional military campaign chests, this chest has been given a more oriental flair.
Heavily decorated in patterned brassware from the solid brass emblems & carrying handles to the floral plates & corners. Finally finished with solid brass borders which not only multiply the visual appeal but also protect the chest from lumps & bumps on it’s travels.
Amazing size for storage to be used as a large blanket box or even a coffee table in a modern setting. Chest opens easily by releasing the traditional Chinese handle on front of chest. Lid stays open by internal latch that secures when the lid is fully opened.
The blend of flamed mahogany and mesmerising ash wood has been highly polished & waxed to help catch every ray of light possible. Ash wood grain is also a feature internally.
